Today the Australian Bureau of Statistics released the Australian Demographics Statistics catalogue series. This series contains Estimated Resident Population (ERP) data for all states and territories as well as the components which influenced the change in population. In the year to December 2013, Tasmania's population grew by 1,541 people to 513,955 persons, a growth rate of 0.3 per cent. The Australian population growth rate for the same period was 1.7 per cent.

Net interstate migration was made up of 12,104 departures from the state (around the long term average of 12,136 persons per year) and 10,644 arrivals to the state (below the long term average of 11,344 persons per year).
In terms of the age profile of the population, for the year ended 30 June 2013, net losses were experienced for the following ages (due either to outward migration or death). Net gains were experienced for all other ages.
As such, Tasmania's population age structure, the distribution of the population by age, looks as follows:

- net overseas migration (NOM) 1,395 persons
- net interstate migration (NIM) -1,460 persons
